Smart choices to avoid waste

Waste begins when we make a purchase – the choices we make when shopping can either reduce or increase our impact on the planet. Here are our top ten tips to assist you while shopping, and to reduce your waste going to landfill:

  • Monitor your shopping habits for a week – do an audit of how much you throw away in the red bin, how much could have been recycled and identify areas for improvement.
  • Write a shopping list and only buy what you need
  • Take your own reusable shopping bags, water bottle and coffee cup
  • Say no to single use plastic items such as straws, balloons, cutlery and plates.
  • Buy pre-loved clothing and homewares instead of buying new
  • Use reusable beeswax wraps instead of cling wrap
  • Use cloth nappies instead of disposables
  • Take your own reusable containers to the deli, butcher and bulk food stores
  • Hire items that are only occasionally used
  • Gift experiences not products
