How were the Asset Protection Zone locations determined?

In 2020, Council engaged Eco Logical Australia to undertake an analysis of bush fire risk to Council’s bushland reserves (owned by or managed under care and control). Its primary aim was to determine and prioritise the level of bush fire risk to community assets at the urban bushland interface and recommend and prioritise appropriate and practical hazard mitigation strategies.

This provided a most detailed and rigorous assessment of bush fire risk and recommended that implementation priorities be initially directed toward sites with the highest risk rankings and subsequently toward sites with lower risk rankings.

Recommended risk mitigation treatments have been included in draft Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Bush Fire Risk Management Plan (HKBRMP) for implementation to 2026/27. Treatments will be prioritised for NSW Rural Fire Service administered funding. Funding of treatments is likely to be based on whether treatments are located within ‘Priority Areas’ and Council’s capacity to implement all recommended treatment measures in line with the timing of this Implementation Plan.
