10/50 Rule

Permits landowners in the 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Entitlement Area to clear, on their own land, certain vegetation that is adjacent to or near an external wall of a building to improve protection from bush fires.

Confirm/ check if your property is in a 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Entitlement Area using RFS online tool here. All work in these areas must be undertaken in accordance with the 10/50 code of practice that specifies rules for clearing, e.g. you are generally not allowed to use machinery, clear on slopes greater than 18 degrees and remove vegetation that was marked for retention/conservation under your DA. Enquiries for the application of the code of practice need to be made directly to the RFS.

If you are outside of the 10/50 Entitlement Area, refer to Trees on Private Property section of our website to find out what tree work can be done on your parcel of land.
