Streets as Shared Spaces: Recall the Mall – Creating Safer Spaces for Everyone

Council has been awarded a NSW Government grant through the ‘Streets as Shared Spaces’ program. The project seeks to reinvigorate Hornsby Mall, encouraging the Hornsby community to recall their mall and reconnect with the space following the impact of COVID restrictions.

It will do this through increasing the quantity and quality of public space given over to lingering (rather than transitioning through), improving the connections and walkability of the precinct (especially at night) through enhanced lighting, curated activation, and marketing of the space to the community.

Project Objectives:

  1. Temporary road closures of Florence Street/Hunter Lane during events to improve walkability and pedestrian safety
  2. Enhanced lighting to support perceptions of safety and night-time activations – both formal and informal
  3. Activations of vacant shop fronts using local arts and cultural practitioners – who, as an industry, have been badly impacted through the COVID-19 restrictions
  4. A precinct wide program of events, including evening events in the library, that will encourage a sense of wonder and discovery within the town centre and encourage people to return to and recall their mall
  5. Deliver launch event to celebrate the reinvigoration of the mall following completion of enhancements.

How will this be done?

  • Upgrading the current lighting to create greater night-time ambience
  • Installing digital wayfinding touchscreen kiosks at each entry point to the mall to help find locations, activities and events easily
  • Increasing Council events such as markets and live music.
