The Riverboat Postman tour

Hornsby Shire Council invites people living with dementia, along with their families and dedicated carers to a complimentary lunch cruise on the Hawkesbury River. This much-anticipated event on 19 September, set aboard the iconic Riverboat Postman, will mark Dementia Action Week.

Dementia touches the lives of close to half a million Australians, with more than 1.5 million individuals involved in the care of someone living with dementia. The theme for this year’s Dementia Action Week, which runs from 18 to 24 September, is ‘act now for a dementia-friendly future’.

Research demonstrates that communities embracing a dementia-friendly approach experience reduced fear and a greater understanding of dementia, less stigma and discrimination, and improved support systems for people living with dementia to live well in their community for longer.

Aligned with Council’s ‘Hello Hornsby’ initiative, which fosters social inclusion for seniors within the Shire, this Riverboat Postman cruise is specifically tailored to cater for the accessibility needs of people with dementia, a group that can be under catered for.

“Embracing the spirit of Dementia Action Week, we are dedicated to brightening the lives of those living with dementia. It provides a helping hand to assist them to get out and about to enjoy the beauty of the Bushland Shire,” said Hornsby Shire Mayor, Philip Ruddock.

“This cruise also offers a valuable support system for caregivers, giving them a chance to unwind and connect with others who understand their journey.”

Last year, Council adopted its Healthy Ageing Strategy, with the plan focussing on improved accessibility, activities to support physical and mental health and nurturing age-friendly environments.

The Dementia Action Week 2023 Riverboat Postman cruise will run from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday, 19 September. The cruise will depart from and return to the marina, close to Hawkesbury River train station. A three-course lunch is included. Tickets will for this special event will be available via Eventbrite on 4 September at 9am.

A Dementia community forum will also be held at Hornsby Library on Monday, 18 September to mark Dementia Action Week. This free event will feature a panel discussion and Q&A with Professor Susan Kurrle, a leading geriatrician and Dementia specialist. Meanwhile, the ‘Hello Hornsby’ initiative has an array of other exciting events upcoming. The ‘Hello Hornsby’ Carer’s Week Comedy Show and Lunch, taking place at Hornsby RSL on Tuesday, 15 October from 10.30am to 1.30pm, promises to be a heart-warming experience for carers and the people they look after. Tickets will be available from Friday, 15 September.

‘Hello Hornsby’ will also celebrate Grandparents Day on Sunday, 29 October, a wonderful occasion where local grandparents, their friends and grandchildren can unite.  Further details will be confirmed shortly.
