Contract extension will keep Hornsby Shire recycling strong
Hornsby Shire Council has resolved to extend its contract with Visy Recycling to process recyclable material for a further two and a half years.
“This is an important contract because it provides stability to our local recycling services at a time when there is great uncertainty in the industry,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock said.
“Most significantly, this means there will be no increase to the waste charges residents are currently paying.”
The recycling industry is in turmoil because of China’s new policy of limiting the amount of recyclable material it will accept, causing a worldwide price crash.
“Across Australia councils are scrambling to adjust to the new situation, with some scaling back recycling and others increasing the cost to residents,” Mayor Ruddock said.
“We have a cooperative partnership with Visy that has served us well and we look forward to continuing that into the future.”
Visy has five paper mills in Australia, one of them in Sydney, as well as a PET and HDPE recycling plant in Sydney and a contract with the Penrith glass recycling plant.
“Hornsby Shire Council remains firmly committed to recycling and Council’s decision to extend its contract with Visy Recycling will allow that to continue” Mayor Ruddock said.
“I have a simple message to all residents: recycle right and be a good sort.”
