Hornsby Council temporarily closes building for asbestos testing
Hornsby Shire Council has temporarily closed its main administrative building because trace amounts of asbestos were found within a section of the ceiling space.
"Asbestos is not something that you take chances with," Council’s general manager Steven Head said.
"We’ve closed the building to be cautious and are conducting tests throughout the entire building to find out the full extent of the situation so remediation works can begin.
“Council’s operations will continue as normal, with no major disruption.
"From Monday 9 November 2020, Council’s main Customer Service Centre will reopen to customers from 9am-1pm for face-to-face enquiries, Monday to Friday in the Council Chambers – Ground Floor. Other staff can still be contacted by phone and email.
“In a way we have been lucky because the recent COVID-19 situation taught us how to very quickly move staff to working from home without much difficulty.
“It was made easier by the fact that much of our workforce was already working from home at least half the week, to limit the number of people in the office and reduce the chance of COVID-19 infection.
“We will share new information with the public as soon as we have it.
“In the meantime Council will continue to operate as normal, just as we were able to do with great success during the COVID-19 lockdown.”
