Preparing your application

We understand that a lot of work can go into preparing a job application. To give yourself the best chance of success, we’ve prepared some recommendations to assist you.

Your application should be well organised and provide enough relevant information about your education, work history, skills and experience to allow us to decide whether you will be interviewed for the position. Make sure you keep your application concise and relevant.

What should your application include?

Your application should include:

  • Personal information: full name, contact numbers and email address
  • Education and training: listed chronologically from most recent to least recent
  • Work experience including achievements: listed chronologically from most recent to least recent
  • Selection criteria or position requirements describe how you meet the essential criteria in a concise manner. Selection criteria responses should be completed on the online application.
  • Work rights: confirmation of right to work in Australia
  • Two referees (one being your current supervisor), we will obtain your approval before contacting references.

What happens after you have sent your application?

We will acknowledge we have received your application upon receipt. If you are selected for an interview you will be contacted. If your application is not being progressed, you will receive an email.

Interviews

You will be contacted if you have been shortlisted to arrange a suitable date and time for an interview.

During the interview a selection panel will assess your suitability for the position against the criteria for the position. The interview will consist of a combination of behavioural and competency-based questions. You will also be provided an opportunity to ask any questions during this time.

Pre-employment checks

  • Police and Background Checks
    This will be asked of applicants recommended for certain positions. An adverse finding on a police or other background check does not necessarily disqualify you from selection. You will be advised if an adverse finding results in your being removed from the selection process.
  • Working with Children Check
    When applying for a position in child-related employment a Working with Children Check is required. Information on the Working with Children Check and to apply can be found at www.service.nsw.gov.au
  • Pre-employment physical assessment
    Many things are taken into consideration before offering an applicant a position with Hornsby Shire Council. One of these is the applicant’s ability to undertake the duties of the role safely and without injury. To determine this, short-listed applicants will be contracted by telephone and asked to attend a pre-employment assessment at Council’s expense.

If you are successful in being selected for the position you will be asked to provide the following:

  • Originals (or copies, certified by a Justice of the Peace) of relevant qualifications, licences, etc and
  • Documentation to show your right to work in Australia (Australian birth certificate, current Australian passport, Australian Citizenship or appropriate visa).

Selection and notification
