Meet the Author Markus Zusak Thursday-2025-07-17, 6:30 pm Thursday-2025-07-17, 7:30 pm

About the author/book

There's a madman dog beside me, and the hounds of memory ahead of us. It's love and beasts and wild mistakes, and regret, but never to change things...

What happens when the Zusaks open their family home to three big, wild, pound-hardened dogs - Reuben, a wolf at your door with a hacksaw; Archer, blond, beautiful, deadly; and the rancorously smiling Frosty, who walks like a rolling thunderstorm?

The answer can only be chaos: there are street fights, park fights, public shamings, property trashing, bodily injuries, stomach pumping, purest comedy, shocking tragedy, and carnage that needs to be seen to be believed ... not to mention the odd police visit at some ungodly hour of the morning.

There is a reckoning of shortcomings and failure, a strengthening of will, but most important of all, an explosion of love - and the joy and recognition of family.

From one of the world's great storytellers comes a tender, motley and exquisitely written memoir about the human need for both connection and disorder; a love letter to the animals who bring hilarity and beauty - but also the visceral truth of the natural world - straight to our doors and into our lives, and change us forever.

Markus Zusak is the international bestselling author of six novels, including The MessengerBridge of Clay and The Book Thief - one of the most loved books of the twenty-first century and a New York Times bestseller for more than a decade. His work is translated into more than fifty languages, and has been awarded numerous honours around the world, ranging from literary prizes to bookseller and readers choice awards. His books have also been adapted into film, television and theatre. He was born in Sydney, and still lives there with his wife, two children, and the last dog standing in a once thriving household of animals. Three Wild Dogs (and the truth) is his first book of non-fiction.

Meet the Author Charlotte McConaghy Wednesday-2025-08-06, 6:30 pm Wednesday-2025-08-06, 7:30 pm

About the author/book

On a wild and remote research island between Australia and Antarctica, Dominic Salt and his three children live as caretakers. This island is home to seabirds and seals, black sand beaches and windswept mountains, and a library housing many thousands of seeds from all over the world. Living in isolation, the Salt family’s lives are turned upside down when a mysterious woman washes up on their shores. Why is she here? What secrets is she keeping from them – and what secrets are they keeping from her? A stunning love letter to the wilderness and to our world; a novel of heart-stopping twists, dizzying beauty and ferocious love, Wild Dark Shore is a story about the impossible choices we make to protect the people we love, even as the world around us is collapsing.

Charlotte McConaghy is the author of bestselling book Once There Were Wolves, and the winner of multiple literary awards. Charlotte will be joined in conversation by Michaela Kalowski, interviewer, moderator & curator for writers/ideas festivals.

Ben’s Book Club Featuring LYREBIRD by Jane Caro Tuesday-2025-07-22, 7:30 pm Tuesday-2025-07-22, 8:30 pm

Lyrebirds are brilliant mimics, so if they mimic a woman screaming in terror and begging for her life, they have witnessed a crime. But how does a young, hungover PhD student and a wet behind the ears new detective, convince anyone that a native bird can be a reliable witness to a murder, especially when there is no body and no missing person?

And what happens when they turn out to be right?

All the ingredients crime readers crave: a retired detective pulled back into a cold case long overlooked by a system that failed its most vulnerable, a missing teenage girl whose disappearance exposes deep-rooted inequalities, and a watcher whose sinister presence raises questions not only about guilt, but about the ways society has turned a blind eye.

Jane Caro AM is a Walkley award-winning Australian columnist, author, novelist, feminist, public education activist and social commentator. She was awarded the B&T Women in Media Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. Once upon a time, she was a multi-award-winning advertising copywriter and an academic. These days, she is a full-time writer, novelist, speaker, MC and TV, radio and media pundit. She has published thirteen books, including the bestselling novel The Mother. Lyrebird is her second novel for adults.

Ben’s Book Club is a free monthly digital book club hosted by author Ben Hobson - brought to you by OverDrive Australia. We welcome guests to join us the fourth Tuesday of each month to engage and interact with authors from all genres. The Zoom link will be emailed to all attendees on the day of the event.
