Sydney Writers’ Festival: Meet Inga Simpson, author of THE THINNING Friday-2025-05-23, 2:00 pm Friday-2025-05-23, 3:00 pm

Sydney Writers’ Festival is coming to your neighbourhood! Join bestselling author Inga Simpson to discuss her moving environmental thriller, The Thinning.

The Thinning is a powerful literary page-turner about two young people in a race against time to restore the natural world and humankind. This urgent, exceptional novel provides a gripping glimpse of our possible future through a fascinating astrological lens, and will have you racing to the end.

‘We haven't always lived like this . . .'

Fin grew up by an observatory, learning about telescopes and planets, inspired by the passions of her parents, then leaders in their fields of astrophotography and astronomy. Those days are long over. Now Fin, her mother, Dianella, and a band of outliers live deep off the grid, always on amber alert and always ready to run.

In the outside world, things are not good: extinctions and a loss of diversity threaten what's left of the environment. With a new disaster looming, Fin finds herself thrust into an unlikely partnership with a stranger who has appeared in their camp - one of a new breed of evolved humans, the Incompletes, who are widely distrusted. But the pair will need to work together during a dangerous journey if they are to play their part in an audacious plan to help restore the natural world - and humankind.

Inga Simpson (b&w photo)

Inga Simpson is an acclaimed Australian author with a PhD in creative writing, renowned for her nature writing and environmental themes. Her latest novel, The Thinning was longlisted for the Indie Award for Fiction and voted one of The Guardian’s 25 Best Australian Books of 2024. Her previous titles, Willowman, The Last Woman in the World, Mr Wigg, Nest, Where the Trees Were and Understory: my life with trees, have all been listed for numerous awards, including the Miles Franklin and the Stella Prize.

Fully booked. Waitlist available

Presented in collaboration with Hornsby Area Residents for Reconciliation

Join us for this special ‘Reconciliation Week’ event to hear the extraordinary story of local Dharug elder, Aunty Edna Watson, and to better understand the experience of growing up Aboriginal in Hornsby.

Attendees will enjoy a deep listening experience through the presentation of an audio recording of Aunty Edna Watson as she recounts her early experiences growing up Aboriginal in the Hornsby Shire. Her moving and powerful story is one that should be shared. Aunty Edna faced racism and discrimination as a child and it was not until she discovered her Dharug roots and culture as an adult, that she became proud of her ancestry.

During her more than 20 years’ association with Hornsby Shire Council and HARR, Aunty Edna became increasingly esteemed and respected for her dignity, advice, cultural leadership, and contribution to reconciliation.

Aunty Edna was recently recognised with an Order of Australia (OAM) for her extraordinary service to the Indigenous community of New South Wales. The recognition acknowledges her lifelong dedication to preserving Dharug language and culture, as well as her contributions to nursing, midwifery, and community.

All ages welcome.

Ben’s Book Club Featuring THE COMMUNITY by Christine Gregory Tuesday-2025-05-27, 7:30 pm Tuesday-2025-05-27, 8:30 pm

Paradise has a price

A murder. A disappearance. A sinister network.

Steels Creek is an idyllic retreat in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It’s a place where everyone knows their neighbours and no one locks their doors. Investigative journalist Lars Nilsson has moved to the settlement for a quiet life, leaving behind a public fall from grace and the crime reporting he was once feted for.

But when a body is found floating in a nearby waterhole and hours later his best friend’s daughter is reported missing, Lars is compelled to investigate, putting him back in the crosshairs of police. What he finds may not only destroy his tight-knit community but also the life he has worked so hard to rebuild.

The Community is about fatherhood, family ties and redemption, told through the eyes of a man struggling to make peace with his past.

Christine Gregory is an Australian writer of crime and general fiction. An earlier version of The Community, was runner up for the 2022 Banjo Prize. Christine has previously been shortlisted in the Sisters in Crime, Scarlet Stiletto Awards.

Christine is a former international aid worker and now works as a Director in a national-not for-profit, working on the prevention of violence against women and children. She lives and works in Naarm (Melbourne) with her husband and two children.
