New 40km/h Road Rule

40km road rule

A new road rule is now in place in NSW requiring motorists to slow down to 40km/h when passing stationary emergency vehicles displaying blue or red flashing lights.

The road rule will be trialled for 12 months and aims to give extra protection to emergency workers and volunteers on the road who often perform difficult and dangerous tasks to help others.

Important things to know about the rule

  • Motorists must give way to any person on foot in the immediate area of the emergency vehicle
  • Motorists must not increase their speed until they are a safely past all people and emergency vehicles in the area and emergency service workers in the area
  • It applies to vehicles travelling in both directions, unless the road is divided by a median strip
  • Motorists who fail to comply with the rule will face a $448 fine and three demerit points.
