How Council works
The elected council for Hornsby Shire consists of ten councillors comprising a popularly elected Mayor and three councillors representing each of the three wards. The councillor's role is to direct and control the affairs of council according to the Local Government Act and other relevant legislation. Councillors are elected to represent the interests of residents and ratepayers, provide leadership and guidance to the community and encourage communication between council and the community. The mayor presides at council meetings and is the public face of council.
Hornsby Shire Council is managed by an executive team led by the General Manager. Five executive managers support the General Manager. It is their role to manage the following divisions: Corporate and Community; Environment; Planning; Strategy and Works. See the Management page for more details.
The Management Plan documents council's principal instruction to its organisation.
The Management Plan is aligned to the six themes developed by council in order to continue its efforts towards "creating a living environment". The strategic themes are
- Working with our community
- Conserving our natural environment
- Contributing to community development through sustainable facilities and services
- Fulfilling our community's vision in planning for the future of the Shire
- Supporting our diverse economy
- Maintaining sound corporate and financial management
