Residential waste services | Commercial waste services
In 2002, a new, Shire-wide household waste service was introduced which has seen a big improvement in the amount of material going to be recycled rather destined for the tip. The new service consistently diverts 50-55% of the waste stream from landfill to recycling. Council continues to investigate and identify additional materials that might be added to the list of items that can be separated for recycling.
Everyone who goes to the trouble to separate their household waste into the bins provided deserves a big vote of thanks.
Council also works to keep our streets and paths clean. Improved its commitment to high service levels of street litter removal, Council has introducted of two new street sweepers and a mechanical pavement sweeper primarily for the Hornsby CBD. The new street sweepers have increased the previous high level of 159 kilograms per kilometre to up to an estimated 174 kilograms per kilometre.
We also work to ensure that as little rubbish as possible enters the Shire's beautiful creeks and rivers.
Council's Waste Team has been working hard to ensure the best service possible is offered to our residents as well as remaining leaders in the field of waste management and environmental stewardship. Some of their outcomes have been:
- Finalist in the Local Government Excellence in the Environment Award 2004-2005 for 'Community Sharps Waste Managment Award'.
- First individual council in Australia to run a pilot collection of ewaste. A record 42.5 tonnes of ewaste was collected. (2005)
- Highly commended in the overall community category of the Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Award 2005.
- Highly Commended in the Local Government Excellence in the Environment Award 2003-2004 for Green Purchasing.
- 2nd place in the Keep Australia Beautiful Metro Pride 2003 Waste Minimisation Award for 'Recycling in Difficult Places'.
- 2nd place in the Keep Australia Beautiful Metro Pride 2002 Waste Minimisation Award for the 'New Recycling & Garbage Service Program'.
- Winner of the Steel Can Recycling Council Local Government Awards 2002.
