Access & inclusion
Hornsby Council employs two part-time Community Development Officers - Access and Inclusion, who work to enhance participation in the community by Aboriginal people, people with a disability, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The original part time position was created in 2002 in accordance with Council’s Policy
COMSPSCS5 (15KB). The position was funded as a full time equivalent (ie 5 days per week) in March 2006 and a second part time Officer was employed. Council’s Access and Inclusion Community Development Officers work to implement the relevant sections of Council’s Social Plan 2005-2010.
The Hornsby Access Committee aims to provide a barrier-free environment in the Hornsby Shire for all people, especially those with a disability, mobility limitations, and their associates. The group’s objectives are to:
- promote access to services and facilities for all people
- promote access awareness to Council and its staff
- provide a forum through which residents of Hornsby Shire may raise problems, issues, and concerns with respect to access
- promote public awareness of access issues
- identify actions that Council can take to improve access, as well as monitor Council's policies, decisions, and actions in relation to access principles.
The Access Committee presents an annual Access Award to individuals, groups, or businesses that have made outstanding achievements in making the community more accessible. To join the Hornsby Access Committee, please contact
Malcolm Wallace, Community Development Officer - Access & Inclusion, on

Council has established an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee to guide Council in matters of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Heritage and Culture, and to give Indigenous People input into decisions affecting their heritage and culture. If you are a descendent of the Darug or Guringai People (the traditional owners of the land comprising Hornsby Shire), an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander who lives, works, or has an interest in Hornsby Shire, or a person who has an interest and a demonstrated commitment to the principles of Aboriginal Reconciliation, then you are invited to join this Committee. For more information, please contact
Malcolm Wallace on

In August 2008, following consultation with the Hornsby Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee, Council adopted a
Statement of Reconciliation (13Kb) with the Shire’s Traditional Owners/Custodians and its local Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community. This Statement is complementary to the Prime Minister’s apology to the Stolen Generations, and Council’s placement of a plaque acknowledging the Traditional Owner/Custodians on the Captain Cook Fountain in Hornsby Park.
