Litter control

Let's keep Hornsby Shire beautifulCouncil has a team of staff who remove litter from public areas in Hornsby Shire, such as public carparks, Hornsby Mall, public footpaths, pedestrian areas and local streets. However you can help to keep our public spaces clean. Below are some ways in which you can help keep our Bushland Shire tidy.

Cigarette butts

Are you tired of seeing dumped cigarette butts? If you have a suggestion for where a public ash tray should be installed, contact Council's Waste Management Team.

Have you spotted someone throwing a cigarette butt from their car window? Council can't fine the offender, but we can send a warning letter to the owner of the vehicle. To report an offence, note the car registration number, type, colour, time, date and location where the incident occurred by contacting Council.

Do you smoke? Get your free portable personal butt bin by contacting us.

Advertising material

Are you finding unwanted advertising material on your car windscreen? Contact us so we can take appropriate action including warnings, fines — or both.

Plastic bags

Help reduce the number of plastic bags going to landfill or ending up in our waterways by purchasing reusable bags. Take unwanted plastic bags to your local supermarket and place them in the specially marked bin for recycling.

Junk mail

Are you receiving junk mail even with a 'no junk mail sticker' on your letterbox? If you are receiving unwanted junk mail, contact the Australia Catalogue Association on 1800 676 136.

Local newspaper deliveries are exempt from junk mail conditions. However, they must be tied or encased so they do not blow away. If you are having problems with poorly delivered local newspapers please contact the newspaper publisher directly.

Littering

Hornsby Shire Council officers can and do issue fines to people caught littering.

Fines for littering are:

  • $60 for small items - bottle tops, stubbed out cigarette butts
  • $200 for general littering - lit cigarette butts, any items thrown from a vehicle
  • $375 for dangerous littering - smashed bottles, discarding lit cigarettes during a total fire ban
  • $750 for dumping items - bags of rubbish, household appliances, or items of furniture
