Compost Revolution

I've joined the Compost Revolution

The Compost Revolution is a community initiative, which started in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and is spreading north to Hornsby Shire, which promotes home composting, growing food locally and connecting with your neighbours.

Did you know food waste makes up almost 40% material in the red lid garbage bin? In Australia an estimated $5.3 billion of food or 20% of purchased food each year is discarded to landfill making it the most wasted commodity in Australian households. But is food waste even waste? Or the start of a beautiful thing called compost?

Why compost?

Join the Compost Revolution! Turn your food scraps and garden clippings into compost. Not only will you avoid waste but you will be able to hold on to those valuable nutrients and use them to nourish your soil, leading to a healthier garden that requires less water and no synthetic fertilizers.

Why join?

Join the Compost Revolution and you and your family will:

  • have fun and meet people in your community
  • receive assistance to purchase composting/wormfarming equipment
  • learn how to compost/wormfarm properly
  • receive ongoing personal composting/wormfarming support
  • be contributing valuable information to a research program
  • be able to support eco gardening events

Celebrate the Compost Revolution!

With food waste making up almost half of the contents of our garbage bins, it makes a lot of sense to use a compost bin or worm farm to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill.

Join us at this "compost party" with fellow members of your composting community to celebrate the compost revolution!

When: Saturday 26 May, 2pm - 5pm

Where: Fagan Park Eco garden, Arcadia Rd, Galston.
Make your own way there ($5 parking fee applies) or meet 1.15pm at Hornsby Park bus stop to take a mini bus to the Eco garden (bookings essential).

What: We will celebrate all things compost-related with:

  • Mini-workshops
  • Guest speakers
  • Games
  • Prizes
  • Give-aways
  • Refreshments

Bring along a photo, mini-story or poem to be displayed on our community noticeboard that demonstrates "what compost means to you". All entries will win a prize.

So, come equipped with your curly compost/wormfarm-related questions or bring your knowledge and experience to help thirst-time composters on their way.

This event is free but bookings are required. RSVP - the Waste Hotline on 9847 4856 by Friday 18th May.
