Batteries
Batteries are made up of non renewable heavy metals and other toxic elements, including nickel, cadmium, alkaline, manganese, lithium mercury, nickel metal hydride, and lead. Some of these can be recycled indefinitely and some elements can threaten our environment if not properly discarded and/or recycled.
Unfortunately, batteries which end up in landfills and incinerators leak into the environment, causing a serious health risk to humans and animals.
Australia does not currently have a national recycling scheme for non-rechargeable batteries. However Hornsby Council is taking the lead and offering a recycling service to its residents for household batteries (no lead acid batteries).
These can be recycled by dropping them off at the following locations:

Light globes
Did you know that the mercury from one fluorescent tube can pollute 30,000 litres of water and make it unsafe to drink? The largest source of mercury pollution entering our environment is from fluorescent tubes in landfill. With currently less than 1% of fluorescent tubes recycled, 99% are going to landfill. Council is taking action against this potential environmental harm by offering a recycling service.
Drop off old fluorescent tubes and other household globes to:
Councils' Waste Management Office
31 Sefton Rd, Thornleigh
Phone (02) 9847 4856
Mon - Fri, 9am to 4pm
Mobile phones
Mobile phones contain a variety of metals that are potentially hazardous to the environment and human health. Over 90% of materials in mobile phones are recyclable and can be reused in products such as stainless steel, plastic fence posts and jewellery.
Drop off unwanted mobile phones, phone batteries, chargers and accessories to:
Councils' Waste Management Office
31 Sefton Rd, Thornleigh

Ink and Toner cartridges
Every printer cartridge contains plastics, foam, metal and inks and toners. By recycling them we can keep both valuable and potentially dangerous materials out of landfill. Since the launch of the Cartridge 4 Planet Ark campaign in 2003, over 14 million cartridges have been recycled. This represents a carbon saving of over 17,000 tonnes.
Drop of ink and toner cartridges to:
Councils' Waste Management Office
