Impounded dogs and cats

When dogs and cats are impounded, their microchip number is scanned and the owner contacted as soon as possible so they can be reunited with their pet.

Sometimes owners cannot be contacted or an animal does not have a microchip. If the animal is microchipped it is kept for a minimum of 14 days. If the animal is not microchipped it is kept for a minimum of seven days. After this time the dogs and cats, if suitable, may become available to be rehomed.

Owners sometimes surrender their animal to the pound. If suitable, these animals may be available to be rehomed.

Missing animals

What to do when your dog or cat is missing:

  • When you notice your dog or cat is missing, contact your local vet and the pound (see above for contact details) to see if it has been taken there.
  • Notify us (call 9847 6853) and verify that your contact details are correctly recorded on Companion Animal Register. The register will be updated to show your animal is missing and when it is found you can be contacted.
If your dog or cat roams away from home it may be picked up by someone and handed into a local vet or a Council officer. It is important for you to ensure your details are up-to-date on the Companion Animals Register.

Moving house

Make sure you update your details immediately as your pet is more likely to wander at this time and may get lost.

Temporary details

If you are away or having your pet minded away from home you can have temporary details recorded on the register.
