Awnings over Public Land

Awnings over public land can cause a significant hazard, including fatalities, and their safety is the responsibility of the building's owner.

Hornsby Shire Council’s awning safety awareness program aims to raise awareness of the potential safety issues caused by awnings.

Owners are asked to have their awnings inspected by a professional structural engineer to deem it adequate.

Often awnings can appear to be in good condition but have internal rust or corrosion that could cause a safety risk.

Owners should also maintain their awning by removing leaves and debris from gutters.
