Hornsby Shire Council is preparing new town planning controls in accordance with the NSW Government’s standard Local Environmental Plan (LEP) template (Standard Instrument).

The preparation of council’s new Comprehensive Local Environmental Plan will principally be a process of transferring Council’s existing Local Environmental Plan, the Hornsby Shire Local Environment Plan (HSLEP) 1994, into the new Local Environmental Plan format.

The new Local Environmental Plan will control development and guide planning decisions made by council. It will also ensure that new development is sustainable and compatible with the character of the shire.

Under recent NSW Government reforms, all NSW councils are required to prepare a new Comprehensive Local Environment Plan in accordance with the standard Local Environmental Plan template by 31 March 2011.

Council’s draft Comprehensive Local Environmental Plan is expected to be exhibited for community comment in early 2010 and submitted to the Deparment of Planning for finalisation in March 2011. When made, the Comprehensive Local Environmental Plan will replace the HSLEP.
