To ensure the special heritage qualities and character of Hornsby Shire are maintained, Council has included heritage provisions in the Hornsby Shire Local Environmental Plan (HSLEP) 1994, and guidelines in the Heritage Development Control Plan (DCP). The HSLEP 1994 lists over 800 heritage items and six Heritage Conservation Areas (HCA), namely:

The Hornsby Shire LEP lists the Shire's more significant buildings, archaeological sites, monuments and landscape features. Heritage items of European significance within Hornsby Shire are listed in Schedule D of the Hornsby Shire Local Environmental Plan 1994. The schedule includes buildings, gardens, trees, structures and archaeological sites.
What is cultural heritage?
Hornsby's heritage resources include buildings, works, relics, trees and areas which are important in providing tangible links to our past. They combine to create a distinctive character and richness to our environment and history.
What is heritage significance?
The concept of heritage significance is based on the understanding that the particular item has historic, aesthetic, scientific or social value for the past, present and future generations. Items of heritage significance usually possess one or more of these values.
Please remember that the majority of the properties are in private ownership. Please respect the privacy of the owners if you wish to view any of the items.
In the assessment of applications involving heritage items or located near heritage items, Council will consider the impact the proposal will have on the item.
