Message in a Bottle DVD

The Message in a Bottle DVD is an educational resource for health professionals who provide care for older people and older people themselves.

The purpose of the DVD is to provide information on the health risks of using alcohol while taking medication (prescription and non-prescription).

Older people are the greatest consumers of prescription drugs, and these may interact with alcohol, causing unpleasant or dangerous side effects, or alter the effect of the medication.

The DVD includes:

  • An interview with a medical professional
  • A case study
  • An overview of what may happen when alcohol is mixed with medication
  • A question and answer section

The DVD was developed by the Over 55 Services team at Hornsby Shire Council and members of Hornsby Shire Seniors Advisory Committee (HSSAC) and Community Drug Action Team (CDAT). It was funded by Hornsby Council, the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation fund (AERF) and NSW Health.

It was filmed in the Hornsby Shire. In addition to professional actors, about twenty residents of the Shire were ‘extras’. The launch was at a Cinema Complex in Hornsby on 28 April 2008.

The DVD will be provided free of charge to training organisations and groups with an interest in the education of older people. Orders for the DVD can be made by completing the following form.
