Presidents and Mayors of Hornsby Shire
In 1905 a Royal Commission was established to divide those eastern and central parts of New South Wales, not already incorporated, into shires or municipalities. This Royal Commission led to the Local Government Act of 1906.
On 7th March 1906 Hornsby Shire was incorporated and the first Councillors were appointed by the NSW Government until formal elections could take place.
Originally elections took place in December, now elections are held in the September.
The Presidents/Mayors were elected yearly by a majority of the Councillors but at the 2004 election residents voted to have a popularly elected Mayor. Councillor Nick Berman was elected for a four year term. Councillor Steve Russell was elected Mayor in September 2012.
