Tips for doing your homework or assignments in the Library

Before you start make sure you understand what your teacher wants you to do. Know:

  • When the assignment is due.
  • how much you need to write.
  • how your assignment should be presented.

What to bring to the Library:

  • Your library card so that you can borrow.
  • Your assignment questions so that Library staff know exactly what it is you are trying to find.
  • A pen and paper and change for the photocopier or printer.

Ask the Library Staff:

Come to the desk and ask the Library staff to help you find the information.

How to choose the right books:

  • Check the book gives you the information you need.
  • Does the book have a lot of information on your subject or just a few sentences or paragraphs?
  • If you need pictures, does the book have good, clear pictures, maps etc?
  • Does the book 'teach' you something new about the topic you are studying?

Don't Wait:

  • Come to the library as soon as you are given the homework.
  • If you leave it until the last minute, the books you need may already have been borrowed.
  • Be prepared to spend time in the library. It is not always possible to borrow the books you need. You may have to work in the library.
