Ebooks and Searchable Online Information

To use the Library’s specially chosen online ebooks and information:

  • Go to the Library Homepage
  • Click on Online Resources from Home or Online Resources @ the Library
  • If working from home, enter your library card and PIN.
  • If you do not know your PIN, contact Hornsby Library on (02)9847 6614
  • Click on a subject from the subject list. To search for the environment, click on Environment, Newspapers & Journals, Science, and Society & Culture
  • Click on the title you want to search

  • Click on WebFeat Search Engine
  • Key in a keyword or a phrase – for example, environment, climate change, pollution or global warming
  • Tick the box labelled Full-text articles only
  • Tick the boxes next to the subjects Current Events & Issues, Environment, Geography, Newspapers & Journals, and Science & Nature
  • Click on Search, and wait until the search is complete
  • In the Results display mode box, choose Relevancy-ranked or Clustered
  • Click on View to see the article

This site provides links to a range of other sites, covering issues such as air quality, weather, energy and the sustainable use of resources.

CSIRO – Environment Overview
This site has information on a variety of environmental areas such as biodiversity and ecology, bushfires, waste management and water related issues.

ABC Science
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see a tag cloud to linking to environment and nature sites, or use the A-Z links at the top of the page.

Greenpeace Australia
Environmental issues are examined from the viewpoint of Greenpeace Australia. Covers news and events, environmental issues, solutions and resources, and gives details of action you can take to protect the environment.

Australian Local Government Association – Greenhouse and Climate Change
This site looks at caring for the environment from a local government (council) perspective. Examines coasts, greenhouse gas and climate change, management of natural resources, environmental sustainability, waste and recycling, and water issues.

Australian Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts
Australian Government site designed to provide information on the protection and conservation of the environment.

Planet Ark
Planet Ark works to show people the many ways they can reduce their day to day impact on the environment - at home, at work and in the community.

EarthTrends
EarthTrends is a comprehensive online database, maintained by the World Resources Institute, that focuses on the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world.

Encyclopedia of the Atmospheric Environment
This UK website, produced by the Atmosphere, Climate & Environment Programme, contains information about acid rain, air quality, atmosphere, climate, climate change, global warming, ozone depletion, sustainability and weather. Includes easy to read text aimed at young people.


Using the online Library Catalogue

  • Go to the Library Homepage
  • Click on Library Catalogue
  • For general information about the environment, click on Subject Exact and key in environment in the Search box. Choose from the subjects displayed.
  • For specific information on topics such as global warming, click on Subject Keyword and key in global warming in the Search box
  • To go to the next page of subjects, click on the symbol at the end of the subject list
