Hornsby Online Herbarium

Linking Lives to Learning and Leisure

The Hornsby Online Herbarium is a searchable database containing details and images of native and introduced plants found in Hornsby Shire.

Situated on a sandstone plateau on the northern outskirts of Sydney, the Shire is one of the largest local government areas in the city. The Hornsby Plateau is cut by deep gullies and valleys harbouring creeks formed as estuaries of the Hawkesbury river, which runs through the Shire. With over 60% of a total area of 510 square kilometres made up of national parks and nature reserves, Hornsby is understandably known locally as the Bushland Shire.

This ongoing project is a partnership between Hornsby Shire Council and the Australian Plants Society, North Shore Group. In 1997, group members Jenny Lewis, Ross Doig, Pat Pike and Noel Rosten began collecting and pressing the plants which form the basis of the online version.
