Seagrass marker bouys

Seagrasses are a fragile habitat that are particularly important for fish populations and provide shelter and food critical to the survival of a wide variety of aquatic organisms.

A collaborative project between Hornsby Council and the NSW Maritime Authority was undertaken to protect fragile seagrass beds off Bradley’s Beach, Dangar Island. This area receives high levels of boat use and members of the Brooklyn Estuary Management Committee indicated concern regarding potential damage from boat propellers and anchoring in the seagrass beds. In May 2006 four buoys were deployed around the edge of the seagrass beds alerting boat users of their presence and directing them around the area.

Funds from the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority have allowed HSC to collaborate with NSW Maritime in updating their boating maps to show seagrass beds so that recreational users are informed of the locations with extend seagrasses. Through this project and some of the educational events that HSC has organised in the Lower Hawkesbury River, it is expected to ensure protection of the seagrasses in the river by the water users.
