Kangaroo Point pumpout facility
The Kangaroo Point pumpout facility, funded by the (then) NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation, was officially opened in November 2002. The facility was installed to enable boat users to dispose of effluent in an environmentally-acceptable manner and as a practical solution to help restore water quality within the Lower Hawkesbury River.
The self serve facility is free to all users. Boats require a 40mm (or 1 1/2") male camlock coupling to connect to the facility. Operation instructions can be found on the pontoon.
In the two year period from February 2008 to February 2010, the facility has collected over 300,000 litres of effluent from both commercial and recreational vessels operating on the Hawkesbury River. The summer months (December to February) are the busiest time for the facility. Council and the NSW Maritime Authority are continuously working to raise awareness and compliance among boat owners and operators to protect the estuary form unnecessary sources of pollution.
The facility was connected to the new Brooklyn and Dangar Island STP early in 2008 reducing maintenance requirements and running costs.
