What is Council doing?
Council has developed the Hornsby 2020 Initiative - Our Framework for a Sustainable Future which makes Council's strategic intent of "creating a living environment" practical and applicable, providing a consistent and integrated long term focus and direction for all Council’s action, policies, plans and strategies.
Council has a strong history of leading its community by example to progress sustainability. To this end council developed Hornsby earthwise, council’s program for corporate and community sustainability initiatives. Sustainable Energy Management is one of these initiatives.
In 2006 Council developed a Sustainable Energy Strategy. This Strategy has been developed as a revision of Council’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy adopted in 2000. With 2010 in mind this Strategy outlines council’s intent on continuing its local greenhouse reduction actions in order to manage the threat from the anticipated increase in energy demand resulting from the increase in the number and size of council assets and the shire’s growth.
In 2009 Council developed the Advancing Greenhouse Purchasing and Carbon Neutrality Framework in conjunction with Manly Council. The project was financially assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Accelerated Action Grant Program.
The Framework was developed as a generic guide for all local government organisations across Australia who may be looking to progress sustainable procurement, greenhouse purchasing and carbon neutrality goals within their organisation.
