Hornsby SHIre Bushcare Program
What is Bushcare?
Bushcare is community volunteers working with Council to conserve and rehabilitate publicly owned natural bushland.
About the Hornsby Shire Bushcare program
There are currently over 850 registered Bushcare volunteers in Hornsby Shire. These community volunteers work on over 130 different sites across the shire. Hornsby Shire Bushcare began in 1989.
Our Bushcare volunteers range from 15 to 90 years, and come from all walks of life. After attending an introductory training workshop, all registered volunteers are able to work on site with a professional Bushcare trainer. These trainers help volunteers learn new skills in plant identification and weed control techniques.
Our approach
Our Bushcare Program aims to structured and supportive framework to integrate the community with the management of bushland. Members of the community concerned with the declining health of their local bushland are able to play an active role in bushland rehabilitation.
The volunteer Bushcare program is integrated with work by Council staff, contractors and other community groups who all contribute to the management of bushland.
Due to the importance of volunteers within Hornsby Shire, Council is committed to the long term support of the program by providing skills, training, information, support and direction to achieve success.

What is Bush Regeneration?
Bush regeneration is the practice of restoring bushland by focusing on reinstating and reinforcing the system's ongoing natural regeneration processes. Each volunteer group aims to rehabilitate the bush from a weed infested or otherwise degraded plant community to a healthy community composed of locally occurring native plants.Bush regeneration programs are long term commitments that require the development of a variety of skills, concepts and techniques. These cannot be obtained overnight, they are developed through a combination of learning, research and observation.
Bush regeneration is not just weed removal, it is an integrated approach that encourages the bush to 'bounce back' through natural processes. This approach must focus on many aspects of the environment such as habitat, drainage, weed sources and establishing native communities.
