Council's Community Nursery produces local native plants indigenous to the local area, which helps to protect and preserve the integrity of the shire's bushland.
Our Community Nursery is managed by Council's Bushland Team with assistance from a group of volunteers who assist with the production of native plants and general maintenance of the nursery grounds.
Our Community Nursery produces plants for:
- Local volunteer Bushcare sites
- Contract Bush Regeneration projects
- Citizenship ceremonies
- National Tree Day events
- Environmental programs run by Council
- Nursery Open Days and native plant giveaways
- Special event days
All plants are grown from seeds collected locally and the tubestock grown include native:
- Groundcovers
- Grasses
- Shrubs
- Vines
- Trees
Nursery Facilities
Council's Community Nursery produces over 30,000 native plants per year in facilities including two shadehouses, a glasshouse and hard stand areas. The nursery complies with Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia standards, and was accredited in June 2005.
Much of the nursery's infrastructure has been fostered through a series of small grants and sponsorship. Sponsors include Boral, Greenweb Sydney and Hornsby Shire Council.
Protecting our Local Environment
All irrigation water used in the nursery is recycled. All water run-off (including stormwater) is collected, treated and pumped back to the irrigation systems from a water recycling facility located at the rear of the property. This facility was installed by Council's Water Catchments Team with assistance from a NSW Stormwater Trust grant.
