Bushfire Management
Of the 30,000 hectares of bushland within Hornsby Shire, 52 percent is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, 17 percent is managed by Council, while the remainder mostly falls into private ownership. Such a large proportion of bushland is unique to the shire. However it also presents a difficult management situation in creating one of the largest urban bushland interfaces in Sydney.
Fire management
As a member of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Bushfire Management Committee and as a local authority under the Rural Fires Act, Hornsby Shire Council is working closely with the Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire Brigade and the National Parks and Wildlife Service to develop a strategic approach to fire management across all land tenures.
This committee is guided by the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Bushfire Risk Management Plan which sets out the initiatives for fire management and seeks to develop a coordinated and strategic approach within both the Hornsby and Kuring-gai Local Government areas. Under this plan, local authorities develop and undertake an annual hazard reduction program which aims to reduce the threat to life, property and the environment. The committee also takes on an educational role, and is continually developing its FireWise program involving street displays and local education campaigns.
