School zone road safety

Council works with schools to promote safe, alternative and sustainable travel solutions for students and parents when travelling to and from school. Every school in the Hornsby shire is provided with a list of school zone road safety education resources to share with their community, including parking regulations and why they exist. Schools can place orders for resources or download material by visiting www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/schoolzoneroadsafety.

Suitable for primary and secondary schools.

School zone alternative, sustainable and safe travel solutions

For schools wanting to introduce alternative, sustainable and safe travel solutions to the school community, Council has developed a School Travel Ideas guide to assist. The guide provides a selection of alternatives to encourage children and parents to walk or use other forms of active travel instead of participating in the congestion during school zone peak periods. Schools can order a copy of the School Travel Ideas guide by visiting www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/schoolzoneroadsafety.

Suitable for primary and secondary schools.

School zone parking management & infrastructure

Council works with schools on parking management, enforcement and engineering, including suitable placement of traffic signage such as No Parking (Set-down Pick-up areas), No Stopping and Bus Zones. Any requests for traffic infrastructure such as Pedestrian Crossings, Pedestrian Refuges or other should be made in writing to Council, care of Hornsby Shire Council, PO Box 37, Hornsby NSW 1630 or via email hsc@hornsby.nsw.gov.au.

Suitable for primary and secondary schools.

Teaching your learner driver workshops

Council holds quarterly workshops for parents, carers and supervising drivers of learner drivers on how to become safer drivers. These workshops offer practical advice and information about the 120-hour Graduated Licensing Scheme to be completed by learner drivers under the age of 25 years including helpful tips on achieving the driving goals as well as explaining the next stage as learners become provisional drivers. Check Council’s What’s On page for the next workshop.

Suitable for secondary schools.
