Arts and cultural development
I was recently pleased to attend the opening of the Hornsby Arts Council’s Bestowed Art Collection exhibition at Hornsby Library. I was very impressed with the quality of the artworks and pleased to see a community group using the new exhibition space which Hornsby Shire Council recently installed in the library to give local artists a place to exhibit their art at no cost.
Over the last few years, Hornsby Shire Council has been working very hard to boost arts and cultural development in the Shire. By providing support and resources to stimulate the arts, we believe we can make Hornsby Shire a better place to live and visit.
Through the 2010 Hornsby Shire Festival of the Arts, presented in partnership with the Hornsby and Upper North Shore Advocate, we are providing promotion and support for almost 200 local arts and cultural events from Friday 22 October to Sunday 28 November. You can pick up a copy of the program of events from any of our libraries or download a copy from our website. The signature event of the festival is the 2010 Hornsby Art Prize, presented in partnership with Hornsby Art Society.
Some of our other arts initiatives over the past few years include the development of a new arts e-newsletter, ARTicle, which provides free promotion for local arts groups who are holding events; our annual recycled art exhibition, 'Returned to glory'; the Hornsby Shire Photography Award; and the installation of new community art exhibition spaces at Hornsby Library, Berowra Community and Cultural Centre and Cherrybrook Community and Cultural Centre.
Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, our new arts centre, is due to open in 2011. The centre will boast facilities that include meeting rooms, community art studios, a foyer exhibition space and artists’ lounge , artist residency studio and much more.
We are proud of our achievements to support, stimulate and enhance arts and culture in Hornsby Shire. For more information about our work, including the Hornsby Shire Festival of the Arts, visit www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/culture or call 9847 6893.
