The Interface Fuel Break Strategy was endorsed by Council at the Ordinary Meeting of 10/6/2006 to provide direction for the management of bushfire risks at the interface of Council managed bushland with both public and private assets. It endeavours to deal with the approach to fuel break development in a holistic manner and to provide for the objective assessment of environmental issues on a Shire scale.

The strategy addresses recent legislation developments under the Rural Fires Act 1997, and assists Council in meeting its obligations related to the protection of life, property and the environment through the strategic targeting of bushfire hazards within financial restraints.

The works program developed from this strategy is intrinsically linked to the objectives of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Bushfire Risk Management Plan and is developed in conjunction with the Fire Unit, Fire Advantage and Firewise Education Programs. Together these programs form the major components of bush fire risk management in the Shire, and are implemented by the members of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Bush Fire Management Committee.

This document has been developed as both an educational resource, providing for transparency in the fire management practices of Hornsby Council, and as a discussion paper identifying the limitations and challenges facing Council in meeting its obligations. It is hoped that this document will allow for improved insight into the working management of bushfire risk mitigation and provide for ongoing discussion into the development of strategic fire management practices.

The strategy forms a living document designed to evolve with changes to legislation, scientific insight and further understanding of risk management. It is published as a versioned document to be reviewed as required.
